Tyler Joseph: The Visionary Behind Twenty One Pilots
Early Life and Background
Tyler Robert Joseph was born on December 1, 1988, in Columbus, Ohio. He is the eldest of four children to Kelly and Chris Joseph. His mother, Kelly, was a math teacher in the Olentangy school district before becoming the basketball coach at Olentangy Orange High School in 2013. His father, Chris, served as a basketball coach at Worthington Christian High School from 1996 to 2005 and later became a school principal.
Growing up, Tyler was actively involved in basketball and played as a point guard for Worthington Christian High School. In 2008, his team secured second place in the state tournament. Despite being offered a basketball scholarship to Otterbein University, Tyler chose to pursue music after being inspired by a songwriter's performance at a local club.
Musical Journey
Solo Beginnings
In 2007, during his senior year of high school, Tyler began recording music in his basement, resulting in the solo project "No Phun Intended." This self-produced album featured tracks like "Blasphemy" and "Taken by Sleep" and was initially shared on his PureVolume account.
Formation of Twenty One Pilots
In 2009, Tyler formed the band Twenty One Pilots with Nick Thomas and Chris Salih. The trio released their self-titled debut album that same year. After Thomas and Salih departed in 2011, Josh Dun joined as the drummer, solidifying the duo's lineup.
Rise to Fame
The band's major-label debut, "Vessel," was released in 2013 under Fueled by Ramen. Their subsequent album, "Blurryface" (2015), propelled them to international fame with hits like "Stressed Out" and "Ride." "Stressed Out" earned them a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance in 2017.
In 2018, they released "Trench," a concept album exploring themes of mental health and self-identity. This was followed by "Scaled and Icy" in 2021. Their latest album, "Clancy" (2024), concludes the narrative arc started in "Blurryface," featuring tracks like "Next Semester" and "Routines in the Night."
Personal Life
Tyler married Jenna Black on March 28, 2015. The couple has three children: Rosie Robert (born February 2020), Junie Belle (born April 2022), and Tommy Stryker (born April 2024).
A devout Christian, Tyler often incorporates his faith into his music. Both he and Josh Dun have tattoos of the letter "X" to symbolize their dedication to their hometown fans in Columbus, Ohio.
Recent Activities
In 2024, Twenty One Pilots announced the "Clancy World Tour" to promote their latest album. The tour commenced on August 15, 2024, in Denver and is set to conclude on May 14, 2025, in London.
Additionally, Tyler revealed that the band was initially involved in creating a song for the "Top Gun: Maverick" soundtrack but were later removed from the project.
